Librarian Villager Trading for Enchanted Books

The enchantment table is a lottery; librarian villagers are a vending machine. With the right trading setup you can buy any max-level enchanted book on demand - which is exactly what this calculator assumes when it plans your anvil order (fresh, max-level, zero prior-work books). Here is how to build that supply.

Why librarians beat the enchantment table

The enchantment table gives random enchantments at random levels, and the anvil punishes you for combining low-level books. Librarian villagers sell specific max-level books (Sharpness V, Mending, Protection IV and more) for emeralds plus a book. Every book you buy this way is fresh - zero prior work penalty - which is the ideal input for the calculator's solver.

How to reroll a librarian's trades

  • Place a lectern next to an unemployed villager to turn them into a librarian.
  • Check the lectern's first enchanted-book trade. If it is not what you want, break the lectern and place it again - this rerolls the trade (before you trade once).
  • Trade once with the librarian to lock the trade permanently; after that it never changes.
  • Repeat until you have one librarian per enchanted book you need.

Lowering prices (and curing)

Convert a villager to a zombie villager and cure it (splash potion of Weakness + golden apple) to permanently discount its prices, often down to 1 emerald per book. Stack this with Hero of the Village to buy whole god sets for a handful of emeralds.

FAQ

Can librarian villagers sell Mending?
Yes - Mending is a librarian trade (any level book can appear, including Mending). It is one of the most sought-after rerolls.
How do I reroll a villager's enchanted book trade?
Break and re-place the lectern before you have traded with that villager. Once you trade once, the trade locks permanently.
What enchanted books can you NOT buy from villagers?
Swift Sneak (Ancient City loot only), Soul Speed (piglin bartering), Wind Burst (trial chamber loot) and the two curse books. Everything else is available from librarians.
Do librarian books work with this calculator?
Yes - the calculator assumes fresh, max-level, zero prior-work books, which is exactly what librarians sell. If you combine lower-level books yourself first, costs go up.
