Enchantment XP Costs in Minecraft: Levels vs Points

Minecraft XP has two units, and mixing them up is the most common enchanting mistake. Anvils charge in levels (cheap-feeling but bounded), while your XP bar actually stores points. Knowing the conversion explains why 30 levels at high character level costs far more XP than 30 levels early on.

Levels are not XP points

Your XP bar fills with points; each level-up requires more points than the last. The anvil charges in levels, so the points you actually spend depend on your current level. Spending 3 levels at level 40 costs far more points than 3 levels at level 10.

The level-to-points formula

  • Levels 0-16: each level costs (level^2 + 6*level) points.
  • Levels 17-31: each level costs (2.5*level^2 - 40.5*level + 360) points.
  • Levels 32+: each level costs (4.5*level^2 - 162.5*level + 2220) points.

Why this matters for god gear

A god-sword recipe might cost 30-39 levels. If you are level 45, those levels represent tens of thousands of XP points - a big chunk of grinding. This is exactly why the optimal anvil order matters: every level saved is a large number of points you don't have to farm. The calculator shows both the level cost and the minimum XP points for the whole recipe.

Practical XP farming for enchanting

  • Enderman or hostile-mob farms: thousands of points per hour.
  • Blaze rods + bottle o' enchanting: instant, trade-friendly XP.
  • Mining quartz/ancient debris: XP while gathering resources.
  • Breeding animals (pre-farm): cheap early-game XP.

FAQ

How many XP points is one level in Minecraft?
It depends on your level: going from level 0 to 1 costs 7 points, but going from 40 to 41 costs 149 points. The formula changes at level 17 and level 32.
Why does the anvil cost levels instead of points?
Game balance: levels feel cheaper and cap how much a single anvil use can demand (39 levels). The real XP points spent are deducted from your bar according to your current level.
What is the fastest way to get XP for enchanting?
An enderman farm or a blaze farm gives the best points per hour. Bottles o' enchanting are the fastest instant option if you have emeralds from trading.
Does the calculator show XP points too?
Yes - it shows the total level cost prominently and the minimum XP points underneath, so you know exactly how much grinding the recipe needs.
